A PLACE TO CALL YOUR OWN

Your Website

There are several ways to get a place to do business on the net. The first of these we will be discussing is getting your own website and domain name. It gives you the freedom to present your ideas in your own fashion and style: however, it is a way that will take some time to get your business known on the net.

This is still a good workable plan as it gives you the time and freedom to learn the many things involved as you go along. The Village is nothing like what I had started out with. It slowly evolved from what had originally been a plan to sell books by my favorite authors. But, as I learned more, the idea to diversify into this "cybervillage" where I could have a bit of something for everybody seemed to blossom before my keyboard.

Getting started isn't hard and is suprisingly cheap. We shall assume you already have an internet provider though if you are stuck accessing the web from a public computer like at the library, you can still get your own site for under $5.00 a month.

Most of the major web companies offer hosting although they are most likely more expensive. I think the last time I looked, Yahoo was charging $14.95 a month. I don't know what their level of tech support is but you can check them out. Options and second opinions are always nice to have.

Another way to have your presence on the net is to sign up for an affiliation with independent companies. The pro's to this method are that, once you sign up with them, you will have a web page on their site where people can be directed to buy the company's product and you get a commission from each sale. The downside is that you can only sell the product the company is offering. Another upside is that you can have many web pages out there that pay you commissions on any sales made if customers go through your site to buy the product. Then another downside, in that it is usually mostly up to you to find ways to get people to come to YOUR page selling the product. We will get into detail and examples in a later lesson.

Before you go, we do have some "homework" for you. We have some informative articles in the Reading Room at the Library to give you a better idea of what to look for in designing your website. When you've gotten finished with this, get ready for Lesson Two, where we will discuss Niche Marketing and Affiliate Incomes.

.........To Be Continued.............

Whichever way you choose to go, we wish you the best of luck in joining us in cyberspace. To paraphrase a popular TV show; "The Money Is Out There..." Go get it!
